Now retired, I’m a former science writer, public information officer, and web content manager at the Mars Space Flight Facility at the School of Earth and Space Exploration of Arizona State University.
At three separate times, I have been an editor at Astronomy magazine (1978-1986, 1988-1996, and 2003-5). I have also written and edited a number of books on astronomy, space, and earth science for a general public audience — see the links below.
(The author of Burnham’s Celestial Handbook was Robert Burnham Jr., no relation.)
I also do photography for fun.
Exploring the Starry Sky (2004)
Astronomy: the Definitive Guide (2003)
Reader’s Digest Children’s Atlas of the Universe (2000)
Great Comets (2000)
Star & Sky (2000)
Caves, Cliffs and Canyons (2000)
Reader’s Digest Explores Astronomy (1998)
Advanced Skywatching (1997)
reissued in 2001 as Backyard Astronomy
Comet Hale-Bopp (1997)
The Star Book (1983)
